The one thing I hear most people miss is the volume, the distortion sounds good but it sounds even better when you saturate the transformers too and get the level up to the sweet spot.

That's the guitar sound we all hear on recording

Listen to Petrucci and you will hear a lower preamp gain while he is driving the power tube section hotter.

dude, have you seen petruccis amp settings? 8 lead gain pulled, and 10 lead drive, the presence is pulled at 2.5 and the trble is at 8. both volumes on 3 and HUGE EQ sweep. That's the thing about the mark IV, you can use lots of preamp gain and still turn it up for powertube saturation and it'll be tight as hell cuz mesa boogies rule like that. Personally it's why i think alot of people have mediocre tones with thier mark IV's and not amazing tones like petrucci or whoever. I basically copied petruccsi settings and changed the EQ around a bit, and it SLAYS
