how does this stack up against other mark IIIs?

The Purple like all MkIII's is a MkIII. It is the second in the stripe series coming after the short lived "black dot". Probably IMO the most noticable thing is that is has somewhat less gain in R1. R2 is also voiced to be "rounder" and has less gain than the subsequent Red Stripe. Still great sounding amps with very minor differences than the other stripes. Any MkIII is a good score.

how does this stack up against other mark IIIs?

I just got mine back from Mike at Mesa Boogie. He gave it the once over and it sounds amazing. I had him add the Volume nob for the R2 channel, and he asked if I liked it as is or wanted more gain out of it. The later stripes have a hotter R2 channel. I personally really like the original R2 channel, and kept it the same, however now I can give it a volume boost when switching from R1. I wouldn't trade mine for any other Mark III version.
