Hey folks,

I went through most of my amps over the weekend and recorded the same solo using various modes and settings. After I was done, I brought out my beloved Mark III and gave it a shot as well.

As far as I am concerned, the Mark III holds it's own well, especially the second take I did using Simulclass with the graphic eq engaged.

You can listen the samples yourself here if you are interested.

Nice job. Interesting comparison. They each sound similar yet slightly different. Surprisingly, I liked the clips without EQ better than with the EQ - with EQ sounded a little harsh and thinner. Live would probably be a different story though. Oh yeah, it's a close call, but overall, I'd say I liked the Mark III clips the best, and the Mark V C+ mode..

I liked the second clip best, too -- great tone, nice touch. But I was surprised by the Dual recto; it sounded smoother than I thought it would by way of comparison.

Nice job, all around.

IMO Nothing beats my Blue Strip with Sylvania EL34's running in Class A. No modern EL34 can produce these sounds. I have tried the RFT EL34's (STR450's) and yet they sound better than all the garden variety EL34's out there today, they are far from the Sylvania's

just my 2 cents

Mark III is a beast but it must be tamed in order to avoid it sounding like a chainsaw (blue stripe, I'm talking to you). With v30, nos preamp tubes and red stripe innards and/or 3+ mod it can sound like a dream, no exaggeration. Mine does. Drool

Mark lll simul w/eq 1st take is my favorite. I can't find the love for class a yet, it sounds like something is missing.

I liked clip 1 (Mark III in class A w/o EQ) and clip 12 (Road King channel 2 Brit mode with EL34s). They sound a lot like what I get out of my Mark IV. To me they sound thick and beautiful.

PS: Nice job in putting this together. Cool thing to listen to while having my coffee this morning!

Thank you very much, I really appreciate hearing that. I think my string bends got in the way of me enjoying the Brit mode clip. Your perspective is good to hear. The bends on the Dual Rectifier Vintage mode clip are much better and the tone is good, so I tend to gravitate towards it in particular.

I love the sustained feedback I was able to get with the Mark III. It's good amp.
