Mark III footswitches - combining into one

What do the footswitches to my Mark III actually switch? Is it just low level vdc that is pulling in circuitry? Instead of shlepping three pedals and cords, I'm thinking about making one pedal with four switches and using a quality multiconductor (20AWG) wire that I'll terminate with 1/4" plugs at the amp. Also, should I use shielded cable?
