Ok, consider myself unschooled in this lengthy mod approach to getting a C+.

I know the C -> C+ mod and the required cap/res changes, etc that Mike sorta has to do, and his "magic he works."

I'm not so sure on the IIa - IIC change. As I sorta understand, its a pcb board changeover? Is this mod still even available??

Something tells me the lengthy requirements required to go this route would be pretty expensive too. How's the tone?

School me, wise ones. There's IIa's often floating around on the cheap and it may be financially cheaper to get a C+ that way than just getting a HRG.

You still can find some regular c's around for a good price, although not as cheap as the a-version. You can even get a c+ for pretty "cheap" if you're willing to go for one without simul-class or graphic eq, especially if it's an upgrade. They're still great amps without all the optional bells and whistles
