If you still aren't sure if it will work, try this: Have someone else play through your amp, and while they are playing, put your hand on the top of the cab and feel it. I can't imagine that you'll feel more than an ever so slight vibration, if anything at all.
Have you ever tried that yourself with a 100W Dual Rectifier and 4X12 Recto cab at stage volume?

You will feel vibration, but agreed, it should not be an issue.

Well, my focus was on the original question, which was dealing with having to turn down the amp to low volumes. If you have your amp up that loud, than you most likely going to be filling up a good portion of the room with sound directly from your cab, which will mean the sound coming from the PA is less important, since you are getting the sound of your cab out in the room without it. Not an ideal situation, but certainly not unusual.

If vibration was an issue, than going back to just marking your speaker cab exactly where you want the mic, and using a separate mic stand, would be pretty much as effective.

Markblasco - I can't thank you enough - you obviously know your stuff! I tried your EQ suggestions with my Rectoverb and WOW! What a pleasant surprise! My RV sounds awesome. I think my son and I had both fallen victim to the smiley face EQ settings which introduce a lot of fizz.

He's at Berkeley in Boston at the moment - I can't wait to share my findings with him when he gets back - he has a show on Sunday and I'm sure we'll try some new settings

Thanks again!

I'm glad I could help. When you're playing with the rest of the band you may need to bring in more of the treble and presence, to help it cut through a little more and keep it from being buried, but that's something you can tweak as you go, as long as you feel like you are in a good starting place.

If you want even more tonal control, try putting an EQ in the loop of the amp. That will give you an amazing amount of control, although it's really easy to mess stuff up, so it's not something you will want to try the day of a show.

Hi Guys:

Just an update on what worked for us..........

Played a gig last night - low stage volume - everything mic'd thru PA

3-Channel DR settings on Channel 3 "Modern" ended up like this:

Gain 1:00
Presence 9:00
Bass 3:00
Mid 11:00
Treble 12:00

The treble control is really where the "fizz" seems to occur. For us - "fizz" started about 12:30 and climbed from there. 12:00 seemed to be good.

This was with a Mesa 2x12 Recto Cabinet - it sounded real nice - thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Chris
