I'm looking for a tube power amp for my ENGL preamp and I'm interested in the 2:50. Does it weigh as much as a 2:90?

I haven't seen too many used ones. Does anyone now much do they go for brand new and used?

I have thought about getting a 20/20 but alot of people talk about them a little lacking in the low end oomph area and I play a lot of metal so I was thinking the 2:50 might be a middle ground between the 20/20 and the 2:90 in weight and power.

I have often times dealt with that issue... weight vs. quality of tone.

Good news -- the 2:50 and newer 2:Fifty both weigh 12 pounds LESS than the 2:Ninety. I owned both versions of the 50W amp but now have the 2:Ninety. The 2:Ninety adds a few extra modes of sonic goodness, though: Deep, Modern, and half-power. These can add a tremendous variety to your tone.

The 2:20 weighs much less than all of the above because it uses EL84 tubes instead of 6L6. That's also why the tone is a little less present, but it's still a very good sounding amp that may be heavy enough for your tone when paired with an ENGL preamp.

Ironically, I'm using 2:Ninety behind an ENGL e580 preamp (and a Triaxis). With the right switching system, you can activate the various amp modes with your ENGL (I use the RJM Music Technology RG-16).

Thanks for the info. That was very helpful.

Those extra modes on the 2:90 make me feel like it would be worth the extra weight.

They are worth it. BIG difference.

I'm working on a review of the Triaxis/2:Ninety for MusicPlayers.com right now. For years, I avoided the 2:Ninety because of the weight. But wow -- the modern and deep switches make a huge difference in the tone. The 2:50/Fifty amps just don't have the same sonic options, though they are excellent sounding in their own right.
