Post some clips or songs Im curious to see what kind of different sounds/Tone you guys can get. I dont have anything yet. Im working on getting a shure sm57 and maybe a sound cardright now.

Here's a pic of the rig and guitar. The axe is a 2002 68RI Gibson Custom with EMG 85(bridge) 89(neck), SPC tone control. I recorded using a SM57, Rode NT2000 into a Yamaha AW16G(no FX or EQ enabled), all FX are from my guitar rig. The speaker cabs I use are Peavey M412's with the standard Sheffields in them, I've put them against Celestions of every model and I still like the Peavey's better...they thump!!!

do you mind sharing what settings you were using on that recto pre and any other outboard gear to get that awesome lead tone on your "nasty" track?

**** thats amazing. I've been trying to get a real fluid lead tone out of my rectoverb head and still working at it. I'm guessing some heavy compression is in order for something like that

Some of the Bluezz Bastardzz demo songs have been done with the Mark IIB and either a combination of 2 G12M25 and 2 G12H30 Celestions in a Marshall cab as well as 2 G12H30 in a Bluesbreaker combo or with a 1x12 EV12L vented Thiele cab. Others have been recorded with my Fender Bassman and Marshall cab. I should also mention that the Bluezz Bastardzz are a ZZ Top cover band, so don't expect the usual Mesa Boogie sound from those songs. Furthermore I tuned the tone control capacitors and resistors for my needs (less boomy etc.):

  • Nasty Dogs (1962 Fender Bassman head, Marshall cab with 2 G12H30, Tokai Love Rock LS 60 with Shaw PAFs)
    Cheap Sunglasses (1979 Mesa Boogie Mark IIB with 1x12 EV cab, Tokai Love Rock)
    Fool for your stockings (same as above)
    El Diablo (Mark IIB, Marshall cab and combo, self-built Strat)
    Manic Mechanic (Mark IIB, EV cab, Tokai)
    Sie liebt nicht mich (Mark IIB, Marshall cab, Strat)
    GTI-Bluezz (Mark IIB, Marshall cab and combo, Höfner semi-acoustic)
    Alte Autos & Rock'n Roll (Mark IIB, Marshall cab and combo, Ibanez Musician + Tokai)
    Lady (Mark IIB, EV cab, Tokai)
    Every breath you take (Mark IIB, Marshall cab and combo, Strat)
    Swingtown (Mark IIB, Marshall cab and combo, Strat)

All band demos are either available on the MP3 playlist of our homepage or at our Myspace site. In our live videos I always use the Mesa Boogie Mark IIB with self-built Thiele 1x12" cab and my Tokai LS60 with Gibson Shaw PAFs.

Did you have to drill to put the active EMG in your les paul? I have 2 les pauls and would love to stick a 81/85 emg's in it but i am not so sure about drilling on my beauties. Got any pics where you drilled or store your baterry pack? Please post so it will give me some ideas

There is enough room in the rear control cavity to put the battery for the EMG's there. I've done this on a few of my friend's LP's without any trouble.

Some days ago I started a comparison of bridge humbuckers in my 1981 Tokai LS120 at home with that Mark IIB 60w head (no reverb, no EQ) and the EV12L cab at bedroom level. I didn't try to nail the original sounds of the clips I chose (mostly ZZ Top stuff), but rather find a common ground to test the pickups where their differences would come through. So again it's not the typical high gain Boogie sound, but using medium gain at a very low master volume setting instead.

So far I've uploaded samples of these pickups: unknown DiMarzio Super Distortion clone, Tokai PAF-Vintage MK2, AGS, Tokai '57 PAF and an old DiMarzio PAF. I think I'll add the Gibson P-94 bridge model today, too, and maybe another humbucker after Christmas. :) Here's the thread on the Tokai forum where I describe the test setup and all settings:

Not a new humbucker, but my old Gibson Shaw PAFs in the 1984 Tokai LS60 and a mono live recording of the LS120 with Super Distortion clone and P-94 in the neck were added in the meantime.

I've got a IV and would like to bother you for some settings on your tone.

I don't know the other tune but it sounds like an 80's band.
