it's really hard to tell sometimes...you know James is always C+ and a marshall, but Kirk experiments way more. For example, for AJFA, there are parts where he used only the ADA preamp and it sounds very very nice.
I've always thought the Black Album sounded very MesaBoogie to me though....Some very creamy parts.
 
As far as I know there were no Mesa amps used for Kirks lead sound on that album. James probably used the IIC+ for some of the harmony lines and the Nothing Else Matters solo though.

According to interviews and the "year and a half in the life of..." vid/dvd he used a CAE preamp in combination with old (Plexi) Marshalls to get the lead sound on that album. And a VOX wah of course.

I believe the Mark IV was used mainly for the demos. The Mark IIC+ was still the main rhythm amp on that album.

Kirk used a Mark IV in his live rig for the tour though.
