Hey everyone.I have read many threads about tube questions generaly and about right position in pream section as well.Last time I swap quintet of stock Mesa preamp tubes (in my Dual Recto) for quartet of JJ`s ecc83s and one balanced Shuguang 12AX7B for phase inverter. When I put new set of tubes in I have heard that amps is more noisy so I swap JJ tube in V1 for Mesa SPAX7.But I found out today when I was trying to change character of gain again that SPAX7 kills the gain. With JJ tube in V1 is amp bit more noisy but gain is much warmer, juicy with crispy top in short words crunch as f**k.I have tryed to change V2 and V3 as well but with JJ`s amp sounds all the way better. What`s that for is V4?
Thanx.

I agree that the spax 7 kills gain and tone in a big way. I just got sucked in by the NOS crowd, but I still want to give some JJ's a try. Plus, NOS is bloody expensive. What kind of JJ did you use?

I just did the exact same thing! I replaced all of my 12ax7's with spax7's. My gain, dead, clean? Dead. Tone? None. I took them back and ordered 5 stock mesa tubes instead, and put my old tubes back in which are V1-Stock Mesa, V2 and 3 EH 12ax7, V4 and 5 stock mesa. I wanted to try a JJ as well, so I went out and bought one. I just threw it in V1. It's an ECC83S which is the standard 12ax7 replacement. I tested with my epiphone flying V that has a Duncan Distortion pick up in the bridge position. This guitar has an unreal bass response. It can actually be way too much when I have lotsa gain pumping as well. I also tune down to B, so when I play on the lower string, the bass is even more present.

Onto the JJ's sound in V1. My clean was great. Really nice and organic. I had been having a problem with higher notes on the unwound strings being too shrill, and causing a little ratty over drive. The JJ smoothed out the shrill highs without actually killing them. The notes were clear, clean, and precise. When I switched to my neck pick up (an epiphone design based on a P 90), I was greeted with an ultra warm tone that was very smooth. What about high gain? In my modern channel, the JJ did not hold me back. I noticed right away that there was a little more string separation, and a tighter bass response. This was with the gain set around 2:00. So, I did the only logical thing, I cranked that gain baby! Rectos have sick amounts of gain, and when cranked, typically lose a lot of note definition. While I lost a little definition, every chord and note I played still maintained a nice separation. I also noticed a more "wooden" sound coming through the amp as well. It seemed that the response was quicker as well, and notes had a little more punch than before.

I don't know if I will retube my whole amp with JJ's yet. I am still waiting for a couple of NOS preamp tubes to try. I have promised myself that I will only buy these 2 NOS tubes and thats it. Too much money. After playing with this single JJ preamp tube wasvery cool, so I will probably be calling up Bob at eurotubes when I am ready to do a retube. I also want to see what this JJ is like with stock Mesa tubes as well. So many things to try, so little time.

On a side note, when I took back the SPAX7's the guy told me that they "were not low gain, just a better spec 12AX7", and that "Pre amp tubes don't influence tone that much". Interesting...

Hi.I use ECC83S.I`m not shure about V2 position coz since I swapped the Mesa 420`s for Svetlana =C= power tubes it changed overall sound and it has started to sound bit harshy.I put there EH 12AX7 now distortion sounds slightly hollow but nice and creamy.

I am going to be doing a comparison soon. I just ordered a Tung sol 12AX7 and a pair of SED winged C's from the tube store. I also have 2 NOS 12AX&'s coming in the mail. Taking way too long. I really liked the JJ in V1, but I haven't tried it in any other position. We shall see what happens.

I have all new Mesa relabeled JJs in the preamp of my Stiletto Ace and really like them! Very nice tubes...

I tried the SPAX7s and they sounded like @$$ IMO. Made my clean channel break up WAAAAY early and the distortion was muddy. Yuck.

I just bought a new mesa STR 12 12AX7-A to swap out in various positions to check for a dead preamp tube. There is nothing silkscreened on it but the mesa logo. i did notice a nice change to the amp when it was in V5. How do I tell what type (as in brand) of tube it is?
I am afraid im a bit of a tube noob

the box has nothing else on it but STR- 12 AX7-A (ECC 83)

just out of curiosity...i dont much care what brand it is, if it sounds good then use it :)

looks like my jj mesas going from memory. I just installed a tung sol in v1 and like it muuuuch better. food for thought. the rest of my preamp is still the jj mesas. prob switch out v2 for a TS and then be done with it.
