An outstanding "chugga-chugga palm muted" sound.

It may sound silly, but I've only had it for a week, and my kids and work have limited my playing time. Good news is I'll be on vacation soon :D

I love the Mark V, eveything is well thought out and it sounds awesome!!!

I just find that when I go into a palm muted section on the bass strings, the amp doesn't throw those choppy bass driven tones that my ears are used to. My first amp was a Randall Warhead (one trick pony, I know), but it was great for palm muted chugging. I also used to drive a 1957 Eico tube amp that my father built (2 X 12ax7's & 2 X el84's) with a Korg AX30G up front, and it sounded great for this as well.

I used to run the volume at 9 on that Eico amp, and the Mark V on 10 watt mode, blows it outta the water (volume wise) set around 4. *note that I run my preamp volume pretty high*

Any setting suggestions or insight is appreciated.

Don't do metal on 10 watt mode. It will sound weak.

This works for me:
Channel 3
pentode
90 watt
Mark IV mode
gain: 3:00
treble: 2:30
master: 11:00
mid: 1:00
Presence: to taste (I like 10:30 with my SED EL34s power tubes, lower with stock Mesa 6L6s)
Bass: 9:00
preset EQ on to 12:00

Makes sence now, 10 watt uses the 5U4 tube, diodes prolly will sound tighter.

I was using 10watt for low volumes..., trying to saturate the power tubes more..., I'll try your settings + my own at 90 watts and chug.

Post my results tomorrow.

On the Chug..

Xotic Boosts are decent for adding some chug. BB is hot, has a slight browning sound. Very popular. AC Boost is pretty hot boosting with almost no coloration (I bought this one). They can help the chug but are awesome for leads.

As a good slave to GAS, I had to try some EL34's in the V to see what the fuss was about. They did brown the tone of CH3 a bit. Very very likable. It was enough of a tone change that my wife, in another room of the house, could tell something was different. Darker tone, good for chugging, and for $50 for two pairs of JJ EL34's. Hard to beat that for a value on getting a different voice from the V.

IMO nothing will make a V sound like a Rectifier, right on the nuts. I ended up picking up a used Single S2 for a paltry $700. A few pedals will get to $350, that is half way to the real deal. The V and REC sound great together as well.

It is about the tone, but as a tightwad person with too many expensive hobbys, the best tone for the $$ involved is always a factor. It is coming up on spring time so it will be time to spend $$ on the Harley habit.. 8)

Peace,
Softail

I hear ya on the springtime hobby thing, I have a complete M3 suspension/brakes changeover for my 325 on the schedule for May, just waiting on some caliper pistons to get the brakes reassembled and I have to decide on which new coilovers to get.

GAS & a Harley habit?!?

I'm in good company here:

Thanks for the advise folks..., it was the 10 watt mode that was killing my "chugga-chugga".

Much tighter in 45 watt mode..., I just can't wrap my head around not saturating the power tubes. But, when nobody is home, I can crank it up and really enjoy the sounds of this beast!!!

Try this: (found here in another thread)

Pentode Mode
Extreme
Bright on
90W
Slider EQ, not preset
Gain: 2:00
Master: noon?
Output: noon?
Treble: 1:00
Presence: either 11:00 or 1:00; I can't remember
Mids: 11:00
Bass: 1:00

80Hz: most of the way up
240Hz: most of the way down
750Hz: Completely cut
2200: no boost or cut
6600: no boost or cut

im very impresed, the amp turns into a completely different animal!
works well for me, nice tight bass

If it behaves the same as the Mark IV the key is keeping your preamp bass low (I put it to 3 (out of 10) on the Mark IV) and using the EQ with the 80hz slider close to the top line.

try the Mkiic+ settings in the manual

90 watts
ow if not no bass
mids below half
treble fairly high
presence to taste

this should do it!

extreme sounds the heaviest to me, but mkiic+ is my fav!
