Is the Dual Rectifier still the right amp for me ?

I think he has the V30 version ;)

Anyway, the next bigger shop is 30 minutes away, so, no big deal.

Yeah, the hunt for tone sometimes sucks ...

Try an MI Audio Blues Pro pedal. Similar to a TS9 / 808 but with more range on all controls. Inexpensive and made very well.

Try Wampler's Pinnacle and maybe the Plextortion. Another, if you can find it, is Marshall's Drive Master pedal, the original black box version. This is a very good pedal. All these pedals can give you the palm mute stuff. It's all in the Level and Gain controls.

If you use a TS type pedal with only a tone control, you might consider placing an EQ after it. This can do wonders for your tone. An EQ in the loop helps, too.

Another TS type pedal is Homebrew's Power Screamer. Also for consideration is CMATMODS Brownie; similar to Wampler's Pinnacle.

I have all these pedals but haven't used some of them in quite some time. The Marshall Drive Master, the Pinnacle, the Plextortion I really like. The Brownie and Power Screamer I can't remember what they were like. The MI Audio is a very good pedal, no question. I also EQ in front and in the loop so this plays a part, too.

I can only suggest to try them with your rig. I can't record samples because alot of my gear is packed away and difficult to get too. Sorry.

Hi folks,

some news from the front:

- I've put El34 (went with Mesa tubes for starters) in the amp and like it. It's not a drastic change, but it seems to tame the low end a bit while giving some upper mid crunch or whatever you might call it. I have to play a little longer with this, but I think I like them better than 6L6.

- on the other hand, the 2x12 Rectifier cabinet doesn't sound too impressive with the EL34's. I've confirmed this with our bass player, because we both know what my amp sounded with the Recti cab + 6L6 and we were both surprised when we tested it again with the EL34s ... my H&K cab sounds much better. The Recti cab sounded rather thin and lifeless. You can't have anything, so I will probably look into the Stiletto cab for starters.

- btw, running without a boost in the moment. Seems to work at the moment :)

So, I'm almost happy and on a good way.

I am on a similar quest for fine tuning my tone.

All the suggestions here are very good and I tried them all.

I have SED in both of my amps ( I run stereo), one has 6L6 and the other has EL34.

I also tweaked my preamp tubes with Tung-Sol in V1 and a JAN Philips 12AT7 in the PI slot.

I added a 4x12 (shared between both amps for now, wired stereo, temporally until I get a second one) to my rig. I have a 22 year old Marshall 1960B loaded with the dreaded 75s, but my plan is to order an Avatar loaded with V30s (or sell the Marshall and order two Avatars) and share the V30s with the 75s in an X Pattern for both cabinets. The dimensions for these two cabs are almost identical. I refurbished the Marshall, which included new soldered 16 awg wire, new custom plate and jacks, tighten speaker hardware, insulate, new hardware...sounds great.

I use gain at the front of the amp with +5db of 1kHz and use my GMajor in the FXLoop at the following settings:

100Hz at +4db and a Q setting of .2
200Hz at -6db and a Q setting of .2
700Hz at +4db and a Q setting of 2.0

I have lowered my gain on the Red Channel Modern setting from max to about 3:00.

Amazing!

They sound that bad ? I have played a Marshall cab with them this Saturday and found them quite nice, altough I only played a couple of minutes and not with my amp ...

Sounds quite extreme to me ... I run gain about 12:30 ...

Fine tuning can be a royal pain lol. I'm afraid to deviate from what I know worked for me in the past bc gear is pretty expensive. I loved college tone (dual Rectumfrier through a recto 4x12 and a ts9).

I'm probably going to end up getting a recto 2x12 an go the ts9 route again. I did try a few other cabs w the dr and they all sounded like compete crap compared to the recto cab. I was pleased w their tone until I got the mesa cab lol)
