i thought i remember someone here saying there are only about 1500 mark III green stripes out there.
is that true?

Might be. They started making the green stripe around the time (89?) the Mark IV came out. So I guess the demand for the Mark III wasn´t that high any more. Even though they didn´t stop producing the Mark III until 98 or so I don´t think they made many during the 90´s.

I have 2683X for 1/90. So from 1/90 to BoogieWan's 9/98 28,353 there are not too many serial numbers in that span. I would assume the serials may start in the 26,400 range for the Green Stripe. Maybe a lower or higher.

my green stripe is dated 4/89 inside, and the sn is 2557x

So just deduct your serial from around 28400. From your's there's about 2300. Still not a lot of production for 9 years. At that, it's only 6% of all MK III's made if you count from 15001 to 28400.
