Hi,
Got a 2 channel dual rectifier. But found out that the old owner puts 2 EL34 tubes in the rectifier sockets!!!! I have to pull these out and order some new 5u4's.

Do you think it's still safe to run the amp without any 5u4 plugged in, using the solid state rectifier only? (Apparently the guy's been running the amp with the EL34's in those rectifier sockets for years!!!!!)

Please help!

Thanks
Chen

What the hell? Seriously?!

Moron! Well make sure you save the 34's to use later if you ever want to drop it to 50W. But to answer your question, yes you can do that in diode mode.

Thanks guys.

I check the dual rectifier schematics. The biggest voltage difference is 350 volt between the 5u4's filament and plate. Sooo amazingly lucky that the El34's pins are arranged so that when it's in the 5u4's socket, the 350's not on the filament of the El34!!!! Otherwise the power transformer is easily burned when switched to the tube rectifier.

I'm lucked out on this one. And I went to guitar center and bought some new 5U4's. Now it's all working great.

Zoomzilla, I think i can use the El34's on my mark 4's outer sockets. I also have a marshall and i can use it there too.
