I'm considering importing an Express 5:50 2x12 from the US due to the massive difference in price here in Australia. Works out at about half the price even with shipping and a step down transformer to bring the 240v supply down to 115v.

Does anyone know what wattage step down transformer I would need? Also, using a transformer isn't going to make any difference to the sound quality, is it?

I have a 5:25, but I'll relate my experience with this anyway. First of all, the my amp has a 1A fuse. So I know it will not draw more than around 1A*110V = 110W in the US.

I use it in Norway together with a 100W step-down transformer. I have measured how much power it draws from the mains, and it was around 60-70W, both in 25W and 5W mode. So I think my 100W transformer is adequate. Since I have a ~30W margin, it probably doesn't affect the sound (no extra sag).

The 5:50 uses a 3A fuse, so its power usage is less than around 3A*110V = 330W, but it's impossible to know the exact value. I would guess quite a bit below, but don't take my word for it. Anyway, if you want the amp fuse to break before your step-down transformer (if you have a tube malfunction or something), maybe you should get one with a 350W capacity? That way you'll also be sure it doesn't affect the tone.

If it saves on shipping, maybe get a head instead of the combo? Then get a nice used 2x12 locally. I'm sure there must be some Australians that make a mean 2x12!

PS: Wow, Firefox is great! I accidentally stepped on a power switch after having written this, and my computer lost power. I had to start it up again, and Firefox remembered everything! :)
