Hi,

I'm thinking of modding my Studio Pre Amp with the Mark IIC+ mod I have details and a parts list for.

Has anyone done this and what are the benefits please ?

Any Help Appreciated,

Parts came to about £5 :-D

Well, I don't mean to be wet blanket and I'm not trying to be smug, but I really can't imagine my Studio pre sounding any better than it already does stock with just some carefully selected tubes.

Hi,

Yeah I know what you mean, it already sounds awesome.

Just curious I suppose, heard that the mark IIc+ is the epitome of tone.

What tubes do you recommend ? It's got stock Mesa at the mo

Cheers

I generally just buy JJ's and Tung-Sol. I'm one of those people who has just not had any luck with Mesa tubes lately. I still find that I have to do a fair amount of swapping around to get the best tube in V1. Also, if you've noticed any change in your tone, you might want to have a tech check the resistors in your Studio's PS. I had a problem a couple of years ago that tube swaps couldn't solve and it turned out to a problem with plate voltage caused by a fried resistor. My tech said this is not uncommon in Mesa's of this vintage.

I know there is a lot of hype over the C+ and much of it is justified. However, I played one briefly many, many years ago while my amp at the time (a no stripe MK III) was being serviced and I don't remember having any problem giving it back when my amp was ready. Not that it wasn't a great amp, but it didn't distinguish itself from other Mesa amps for me. Of course, I'm not a Metallica kind of player. So that super-toppy, scoop thing is not something I was dialing in. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

Oh, by the way, I see you have a 295 in addition to a Studio pre. That combo was the heart of my rig for a lot of years. Man, you are really going to have a hard time beating that tone!

Great advice guys,

I actually have an old British Made Mullard ECC83 tube I took out of my old JTM 45, maybe I should try putting this in V1 position to see how it sounds ?

Also while I've got it apart I'll check for fried resistors, I've just replaced a load of Carbon Composite resistors in my 295 cause they had drifted outta spec.

Ha ha yeah the Studio Pre and 295 setup has "Master of Puppets" written all over it, although I used to like playing that stuff I've moved on a bit

Still love the fact that it sounds just like it though

I'm loving the EV's I've got in my cab too, such a responsive speaker, had a recone job done on them both recently, excellent quality too, £80 each to re-cone with genuine EV parts.
