Hi

New to the Board. Have a question.

I'm the original buyer of a loaded Mark IIC that I sent back to MB to get the + upgrade maybe a year later. It's a really sweet amp.

Head only, Hardwood, Simul-Class, EQ, Verb, Export, Original Anvil case
All paperwork

Excellent + condition.

My question: Is there an inventory that breaks down amps by how they were configured at the factory so we could know how many Mark IIC's were, say, heads vs. combos, how many Simul-Class, how many had EQ, and so on?

Thanks, Robert

Hello Robert,

Unfortunately, there is no known catalog of how the amps were build.
From what I gathered, the options were written on the side of the amp, as in DRG, or Simul/Reverb/Graphic and populated with the proper circuit boards.
After the final assembly the serial number was added, the cabinet on the order was fitted and the amp went to the play testing.
There was a hang tag attached to the power core with all of the employees involved with the building of the amp. From there it was shipped to the owner with their copy of the invoice. If Mesa kept all of their copies it could be determined what percentage of each type of amp left the factory, but these documents do not seem to exist anymore and were probably discarded within five years after the amps were produced. The speculation of amps produced from 12,500 to 15,000 has yet to be found credible as there are examples as low as 12,400 and they just seem to not exist over 14,400. My guess is around 1900 or so were produced in reduced numbers in 1985 and finally discontinued in March or April of 1985. It's also impossible to determine to what figures were optioned with any particular addition such as simul-class. Thus, the difficulty in defining an actual correct answer to many unanswered question. It really an enigma.

Thanks BB

The more I'm reading, the more I'm wondering if the magic 15,000 number was just a way for Mesa to begin the next series (MkIII) with a clean/strong number. There's logic for doing it this way, though it does invite speculation about a huge number of unaccounted-for amps. I'd think the guys at Mesa would be able to shed light on this.

Just speculating here -- I admit I don't know squat. I do know my amp sounds sweet and that's what's important.

While you're on the line, here's another one: Given that my amp was a Mark IIC, and the factory + upgrade happened maybe a year or so later, should the specs be identical between mine and a C+ original build? Mine does have Mark B's initials and + mark on the back.

All comments welcome.

Thanks again BB et al.

One further question ... what is a C -> C+ conversion amp worth roughly?

yes, electronically speaking and tonally speaking, they are the same.

A C--> conversion usually gets about $500 less on the average, although the extra features have a lot to do with it (simul class, hardwood).

Thanks Elpelotero

So back to the original question:
How about using this board to begin recreating the Inventory?

Everyone who wants to, place their serial number and model with associated features info: Head/combo, finish, power options, verb, eq, transformer, date-of-purchase (If known), history (ownership facts if known), location, whatever.

Is there functionality in this board that could handle this?
Would people be interested in knowing what else is out there?

I know, if it would be open to all vintage models...well that's a s*&tload of data.
Still might be fun and useful though.

Thoughts?
Robert

It would be an insurmountable task. The Mark Registry has been up for years and only has 46 IIC+'s documented. Not all of the data makes sense either as is is voluntary and unconfirmed.

Thanks
I went to the Registry site. That seems to have most of the necessary fields.
Maybe this is a good time to remind people to populate it.
I'm gonna post my info. Can't hurt.

Isn't it true that Big Mouth is the very first graphic Soloist ?

The Suhr's or Pensa/Suhr's are not to shabby either.

Sure I'll share some amp porn.

This is how I ordered it back in '83. 2 EVM12L cabinets in Black. There was method to the madness.

Her face. Notice this was a IIC modded to + 2 or 3 years later.

And finally, we lift the skirts to reveal what's underneath.

Did I mention she sings beautifully as well?
