Hi all. I put the 12at7 in v1 of my Mark III today. Wow, big improvement for cleans, and more clarity for gain. I also put a 12ax7R in v3 to compensate for the v1 change and it made up for the 12at7 plus just a little more. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better!

interesting! I just got ahold of an RCA 5751 blackplate and tried it in my mark III v1 yesterday. I really like it a whole lot, but I would think a 12at7 might be a little too much cut in gain. What brand did you use?

It was just a groove tubes 12at7. I see some regular bashing of their tubes, but I've always thought they are a good tube, never had one fail. It just so happens that this is the brand I can buy locally so I sometimes do. V3 was also GT 12ax7r, V2, V4, V5 JJ ecc83s. Sounds good, and I really think that with the high gain tube in V3, it was still a net increase in gain on Lead channel with a cleaner, rounder, airier R1. R2 on my purple stripe is pretty low gain to begin with, kind of that sweet bassman just starting to break up tone and it lost maybe 5% gain but sounds so much more organic.
