search the forum and you'll find a lot of information on compressors. Seems like Barber Tone Press, Keeley, and Ross are mentioned most. Barber seems to have the best price/value relationship - doesn't mess with your tone/attack much but you can dial in the sustain.

I love my BYOC Five Knob (ross-style) compressor. I built it from the kit. It can be very transparent or you can hear it if you want.

Old style (2 knob) Keeley Compressor, very transparent

Barber has the blend knob, vintage tone trim, or absolute transparent compression. And I own 2 of em. One for each board.

If you are after strong compression, you can't go wrong with the 4 knob version Keely compressor. Very good tone, but a bit too "squishy" for me. If you need something more subtle, look for a compressor that has an attack control or can blend in some of the uncompressed signal, like the Barber Tone Press. I find the Tone Press a bit unexciting compared to the Keely, but more suited to my needs. Currently I use a Black Box Oxygen pedal. The controls are effective, but a pain to dial in. I mainly use compression for slide guitar, but occasionally I'll use it for a clean, twangy country guitar solo or squashed power chords. A big part of compression is how much signal you push into the pedal, and some people have trouble finding one that works well with their playing style. Also, higher output pickups, or bass heavy tones will cause compression to happen sooner. I think you just have to try a few compressors to find one that sounds good and works well with your gear and playing style.

Good luck with your search,
Dave

I am probably going to get the tone press when i get some extra cash. don't have a super need at the moment but based on the clips i have heard it sounds like the one for me.

The Keeley pedals are great! You might also want to consider the Route 66 pedal. It has both compression and overdrive with true bypass. I've had one for quite a while now and it just rocks. The compression just gives me loads and loads of sustain without coloring my guitar's tone. You can check it out at www.visualsound.net.
cheers!

....+6 for the keeley ..also if are a vet, he will give you a discount!! robert is THE MAN!!
