how much for a studio preamp?

That sounds way high. I have seen a studio pre go for $300 on a BIN on ebay recently. Market now seems to be in the $350 to $400 range. Do a search on ebay for completed auctions and you should get a good idea of the current market on these.

I wouldn't pay over $370 USD for one. Not because I don't think it's a good unit, because it's an awesome preamp, but you should be able to get one for less than that.

I payed 400$ CDN for mine and mine was in perfect condition, no scratches or anything, looked brand new. be patient and look around.
