How do you take the chrome diamond plate off rectifiers?

I want to replace it with plexi-glass or just some black grill cloth type stuff, how do I take it off though?

I think from past threads that I've read on here, you need to use a heat gun to get the diamond plate off. I've heard that it is held on the cabinet by industrial strength double sided tape. I also heard that you have to be careful that you don't end up hurting the binding on the amp with the heat gun.
