highway star - a loving cover.
LOL :D

((ok, since no one has commented, i made another mix, a hotter bass track mix, and uploaded it))

this is an ongoing project, a collaboration with xenophile.

He did all the keys and drum programming, i added vocals, guitars, and now, bass.

guitars are custom strat>>Mesa Boogie Mark2b head, fitted with power adapters- the groovetubes Substitube (changes 6l6 to EL84, lowers wattage, turns to Class A ?)

c'mon, american made amp, with american made tube adapters!!
LOL

Hey Gonzo,

I like everything about it but the bass part. Too honky for my taste.

got it, thanks!

trem
thanks for listening!
that honky bass sound, well, that's kinda how the original sounds!
LOL
well, it's that ricky sound, thru, i guess, a marshall....
really driven hard, last night, i took a sony distortion effect, blended it in just slightly, and that seemed to smooth it out a bit more...

then, i compressed the track a bit more, with a neve patch, and pushed it down pretty hard, with makeup gain, and THAT made it set in the mix even better!

still tweaking it, obviously........

well, a couple of folks have chimed in....

but i really thought there'd be more interest in hearing some tracks with the TUBE ADAPTERS in an older model boogie.

when i first heard the adapters in the boogie, i though "now here is a perfect marraige between the 'vox' sound, and the original 'boogie' sound"

now, that i've heard more el84 flavors in other amp designs, i don't think it really is 'vox' like, but i do believe that the el84's just happen to work great with the mark2b circuitry.

it's a cool sound.

Gonzo, just stumbled onto this post, very nice frackin' job doin' Deep Purple justice.

Yeah the tone on your Mark with EL84's, very cool. So obviously it drops volume but how do you perceive the tone difference as opposed to 6L6's normally ?

hey, glad you liked it!
it Aint easy, tryin' to channel blackmore..
i had to wear a pilgrim hat, to get my head in the right space...
;)

ThunderMonkey
thanks for listening....
yeah, it drops the volume, but it also adds this 'chimey' sound, that the 6l6's don't have.... or at least, it's a different flavor..
plus, the amp breaks up quicker...
so, i can back the gains down a bit, for clarity and 'kerrang', but it still breaks up nice when you hit it hard, and backs off when you strum lightly.....
i really like the sound of the el84's with the boogie.. even tho it was never designed with those bottles in mind, it really works with the mark2b circuit.
in some ways, i prefer it!!
but, i've been on the 6l6's for so long, that's my comfort zone.

Tyrant
thanks man!

it Aint easy, tryin' to channel blackmore.

He's definitely a one of a kind phrase player, I've always really dug his dynamics.

I don't have much personal experience with EL84's (6L6er myself/part-time EL34) but that touch sensitive gain breakup seems to be it's hallmark.

Who makes those adapters anyway? Curious

these are the GrooveTubes Substitubes.

i really like them better than the THD yellowjackets, which i demo'd before the groovetubes.
