Ive always ran my DR on bold/tube rectifiers. Half way thru rehearsal the other day I chucked it on spongey for a change. And dam got say I'm really digging it. Same tones but more fluid and a bit smoother and spongey :D.
Palm mutes and chugging are looser but nothing unusable and the overall sound is great and makes up for it. And the lead tone on ch2 vintage is awesome

Anyone else use spongey for high gain stuff ?

Love it for leads. Its the only way to attempt to get a lead tone that feels good out of the amp.

I like Spongy/silicon for leads and Bold/tube rectifier for high gain rhythm

I don't much use the silicon diodes for anything except the tightest of speedier metal, which for me is very rare. Otherwise, the diodes are far too strident and certainly don't have the same sustain for lead playing IMO. I agree that Bold works better than Spongy on rhythms, especially for modern sounds or songs where you really need to punch through.
