Loaned a buddy my Rectoverb Combo. He brought it back and said that, "Very little noise came out of it. It smelled hot and then cut out." He'd pulled the fuse and had it in hand when he brought the amp back. Sure enough the fuse was blown.

I looked on the back of the amp and the combo speaker was plugged into the Slave Out.

It was too late to go get a fuse. I'm hoping this is all I need. What was the potential impact of this?

Looking on the bright side :D at least he offered to fix it or buy it. I was going to post it on eBay tonight. If he had said nothing I might not have caught it.

Not good that he didnt have a speaker load on it . Replace the fuse and see what happens .

want any trades or how much for the rectoverb?

I'm going to focus on getting it fixed then it's probably straight to eBay before anything else can happen to it! This was the last thing that I needed as I was supposed to sell off gear before anything else came in the house. The timing couldn't be worse.

Is your buddy mentally incapacitated or what?

I'd be pissed! Good luck with your amp I hope he didn't fry the output transformer.

Cross your fingers you didn't smoke an OT, hope everything works out for you!

Platy - Man I hope not! What does an OT go for? Guess I'll know pretty quick when we swap the fuse out huh?

ask him how long he played it for. if he played for an extended period of time, that OT might have been what smelled hot.

any way you slice it, it sounds like an ugly situation.

hope it is just a fuse :?

that sucks bigtime man!

Replace the fuse with an MDL (slo-blo) from radio shack or home depot. It'll cost like $2.

I personally would sell the amp direct instead of dealing with ebay...ebay fees can take a nice chunk out of the final selling price, plus the paypal fees after that.

I would use ebay as a last resort.

I'd have the amp checked out before you sell it. That would be mighty lame if you sold it and the amp gave out soon after the buyer got it.

No way I'd do that to someone. I talked to my Mesa rep today and he said to try replacing the fuse, if that doesn't do it replace the output tubes. If that doesn't get it, it's probably a grid resistor or worst case OT.

The bench costs aren't bad and he said even if it's replacing an OT it would most likely only take an hour.

The work will be done by a Mesa technician and in it's original condition before I sell.

Thanks for all your techincal advice guys, you were spot on with what the technician said. I don't know rat sh!t from rice crispies when it comes to something like this but I'm learning. Especially not to lend out your gear!

:?

Crap.. I hope you didn't take that the wrong way. Just trying to give you the heads up that you should probably take it to have it checked out before selling it since the amp was run without a speaker load attached.

The same thing happened to me. The result was a burnt power tube socket. The board was burnt & crispy, & forever ugly, but no issues.

All power tubes were replaced + the burnt socket by a local tech. Less than a year later, I wound up shipping the chassis to Petaluma, and they practically undid everything the local shop did, & replaced everything to original specs.

Here's what I would do:
Remove the chassis, givie it a good cleaning with a spray cleaner meant for electronics, & inspect the board for scorch marks, burnt wires, etc. Then I would replace the fuse & test it out.

Good luck, hope for the best.

Charlie - No harm no foul dude! There are a lot scroats out there that would do something like that. Sucks but it's true. I'm not one of them. I'm not a religous person but I believe in the golden rule. Maybe even karma to a certain extent.

I pulled the chasis yesterday, forgot to mention that and the board and the sockets were fine. I should have taken pictures.

Today the guy that popped it brought me the proper slo blo fuses. I tried it with a new fuse and it popped again. Put another fuse in and a new set of JJ's I had laying around. It worked perfectly I warned the wife and cranked it for a half hour, no issues.

Funny thing, I had a SPAX7 in V-1 and V-2 to V-5 were Groove Tubes. I placed the GT's in V-1 to V-4 and then a JJ ECC83 in V-5. Man was that a good combination! The cleans were good and the recto slam was awesome. I hate to see it go, but I like the options on my DR better.

So really the only thing I'm out is a set of Mesa Tubes Power tubes and learned a lot in the process.

Thanks again for your advice guys.

The only other person that may be happier is my wife. Cuz if there was a problem with that ROV, that smokin new 2ch DR and 4x12 that I got may have been on eBay!
