Well it's out. The in depth interview is cool. The only thing that is kind of disapointing is the caption on the cover "Saviour of Shred?". While it's true that Guthrie can totally burn he can do so much more than that. I think that many people who would actually dig Guthrie might not be inclined to check him out because of the label "shred". Let's face it many people think that shred is a ridiculously self indulgent style of guitar playing in which most musical sensibilities are given secondary consideration in favor of playing fast. For that matter there are a great many players who play this style that have very predictable musical vocabularies that are primitive with regard to melody, harmony, and rhythm. Guthrie is anything but this; He is a true virtuoso (I'm so sick of this term being thrown around to describe great players who do not meet the criteria of the definition). He can play Rock, Blues, Jazz, Fusion, Bluegrass, Country, Slide and other styles at beyond master levels and he is just as badass on an acoustic. He is so insanely versatile and Guitar Player needs to label him as "shredder" because he has ricockulous chops. I might as well play devil's advocate for a moment- I suppose one could argue that because of his versatility, level of mastery and unique musical voice that he is in fact saving shred from everything that is predictable and cliche' about it. Just my .02.
