curios to hear if anyone has modded their ED's. im interested in kicking the gain up a notch and maybe adding a half power switch to take it down to 22 watts. ive looked at voodoo mods. anyone hear good things about them?

Extra Gain and half power? This would make the Dyne the PERFECT amp ^_____^

I hear Voodoo Mods does good work although I've never had work done by them. I'll probably send my amp out that way for a cap job in two or three years. I know it is getting old and will need a checkup soon.
Definitely call them up to find out if what you want is possible. The Dyne is a complicated amp and any sort of gain 'boost' would be best if you could add it to vintage low of vintage high independently by way of a switch of some kind . . . I 'personally' would prefer to be able to run it stock but that's just me. Are you thinking vintage low having the same gain level as vintage high and then a more molten metal / lead sort of an option available for vintage high?

I also don't know how things work with simulclass but it seems like it might be complicated to figure out. Of course I'm not an amp tech so I don't know what I am talking about. Just trying to make conversation here . . . Who knows, maybe Voodoo Mods will show up?

That is a silly response. People mod duals for higher gain, better lead tones, tighter response, etc. I think it is perfectly legit to think that this amp is the 'perfect amp' except for a couple of niggly details. i.e. it is far too loud and doesn't have quite enough gain for an apartment practice amp. You have to be aware that the guy who started this thread was actively gigging but he is now going back to college. He likes the amp but wants a usable tone at low volumes. Can't say I blame him.

When I tried the Dyne, my ideal tones were on extremes with the volume set low for clean and set high for gain. I 'personally' would benefit with two independent channels and three modes / three volume controls because that way I could adjust everything better to suit my needs. It doesn't mean the amp is bad. It just means the design concept requires compromises. Of course, if you are Birdy, you just buy the ED combo for clean and the ED head for gain! **ENVY*

As far as modding the ED for this, that and the other...here's my opinion.

If you have an amp, that has the best BASIC tones(and features) that you're looking
for...why try to make it something it wasn't when you bought it(other than tube and speaker
changes) ?
As it is, the amp sounds killer. Get some high-end pedals that gravitate towards the tone you're going for. There is a lot of booteek pedals that will sound as good as they are built to sound, when you put them in the mix with an amp like the ED.
I have yet to try a pedal that doesn't sound amazing through this amp and heard some of
the same pedals through other lower-end amps that friends have, and they suck.

I'd rather spend $200-$500 on a pedal that I can re-sell, rather than have to pay to have my ED(s) un-modded.
I usually use a little delay/tremolo from pedals and the on-board reverb from the amp, that's it for me.
I was happy when I got a seperate on/off pedal so I could switch the on-board reverb off/on in any mode.
YMMV.

Adding more gain - There are several ways to add more gain and each way lends itself to a different sound and feel. I've found it's best to talk on the phone so that I can ask you several questions and your answers will likely spur on more questions. Together we can determine what will best meet your needs.

Half Power switch; As long as there is enough physical room inside the chassis we would be happy to install a half power switch for you.

I would be more than happy to talk with you in depth about what you are looking for tonally. Please feel free to give me a call any time Mon-Fri from 9am-5pm EST (NY time).

Have a great day! :)

Many thanks good sir! :) This is a great forum with great guys (truly). Everyone can discuss topics without getting overly heated, which is very refreshing in comparison to some other forums. All forums have their place but this is a fantastic forum. Kudos to all that help with the forum as well as all it’s members, well done gentleman!

I was trying to change the email address on my account here but I cannot seem to find a way to do that, perhaps I am over looking the obvious (lol) however if anyone has a question I can help with please send me an email to [email protected] as a heads up and I will come right here to help. It does not have to pertain to us Modding an amp. If you are experiencing problems with your amp, trouble shooting or what ever the case may be - I am happy to help where ever I can :) I hope every one has a great Tuesday morning/afternoon!

All the best to everyone!!

I'm curious about how one would mod an Electra Dyne for half power of 45 watts. As I understand it, the amp runs at 90watts running two tubes in simulclass operation which is a combination of A/B and class A; and 45watts running two tubes in class A/B. Would a half power switch simply run the amp with 2 tubes in class A or is it simply a case of adjusting the variac? (yes, I have no clue what I am talking about =-p)

That was funny at the end (made me laugh--lol). Seriously though, from a technical perspective there is not a true variac inside the amp, as such I would have to say no it is not as simple as adjusting the variac. In short, it would be a technical based explanation but suffice to say it would not involve the use of a variac (joking of course--lol).

All the best good sir!

I know it is hard but can you give me a watered down technical explanation? I understand the basic 'mechanics' of how class a/b, class a, etc work but that is about it. I'm just very VERY curious! Is it a trade secret?
