MXR all the way but not in the loop, using the front input. i hate the 10% dry signal you cant get rid of in the loop

Unless you're specifically trying to achieve a psychedelic "computer-generated noise" type of sound, you don't put a flanger in front of your preamp and tone stack. Like all modulation effects and reverb, it belongs in the loop. Modulation effects are meant to take your basic core sound and then color it by running it through a modulating filter of whatever type. Putting it up front is like putting the cake on top of the icing.
