Well I FINALLY got to play one today. The word on the Boogie Board was that one was at the Steeles Long and Mcquade location in Toronto. I called right when they opened this morning and I was calling, the guy who had purchased it on Friday was returning it. Why? because to him it didn't sound enough like a Fender Twin. Retarded. Anyway, I put the combo through a 4x12 Recto Cab, I didn't use the combo speaker at all.
So what can I say other than that I put down a deposit and had a head ordered right after I was finished playing. But I will try to give as much insight as I can. I was playing straight through a Les Paul Studio that was identical to the one I have at home.
To start this amp is very true to the many youtube video I've watched but obviously much better in person.
Channel 1: The regular clean is very similar to the Mark IV clean but a little richer and more crystally and 3-D if that makes sense. the fat clean is just a fuller version that clean but is a way better clean than the Mark IV. I didn't spend much time in tweed, but it was very spongy and vintage sounding, it would suit my needs, but I don't think real Fender tweed users will be convinced and I wouldn't blame them. The bold switch does as described, just adds a little punch to the signal.
Channel 2: Thank you Randy for not having this channel be anything like the Mark IV. Edge is a very usable rhythmn gain, very light and vintage sounding. Like in channel one, crunch takes edge up a notch in gain and mid range for thicker distortion sound. Mark 1 sounds great as a liquidy, buttery smooth lead sound. while trying this channel I noticed that edge and cruch sounded great but Mark 1 was a VERY flubby, I then noticed that I had yet to engage my bridge pickup, that's how sweet the edge and crunch are, even a neck pickup rips. All these voices are signifigantly enhanced by the eq.
Channel 3: The Mark IIC+ is very cool, it is pure Metallica, throaty, thick put very tasteful. As a Mark IV owner, the Mark IV setting is very true the original ...on it's best day. Because the simplicity of the mark 5 I found it easier to get a great IV sound. For Extreme, I was expecting a very harsh high end but it was a more powerful and raw version of the Mark IV. I could get wicked squeals in 10, 45 and 90 watt modes.
The reverb is a huge improvement and there were no pops while switching channels. The footswitch is huge, which is to be expected. I wish that the presence knob had more of an effect when increasing it. But that is pretty minor.
Like I said, I have a head on order and I'm already in love with amp. If I can be of any help to people try figure things out, I'm more than happy to answer questions.
