Rather long clips, in fact... songs!

My band just finished recording 8 instrumental tracks in our home studio. We have four of them up on myspace at http://myspace.com/xoclore. We recorded everything using a Presonus Firestudio and Digimax FS going into a PC running Cubase SX.

The ones up there now were chosen to represent the full spectrum of our sound, from funky to heavy. I'd say a few of my favorite guitar parts are the solo at the end of Black Train, the lead parts in the choruses of Too Much, the trippy breakdown in The Same Family, and basically all of the D-Tune (we made lots of room for guitar in that one).

I did these guitars mostly with a Fender American Standard Strat with lace sensors in the neck/middle and a SD hot rails in the bridge (used the hot rails a lot more on these recordings than I expected to), and did some overdubs and other minor parts with an Ibanez SZ720FM.

I used my Mark IV wide combo and halfback 1x12", mic'd the combo with an Audix i5 and the 1x12" with a Sennheiser e906, and mixed in a little bit of direct/recording out on a few parts.

This whole home recording thing has been quite a learning experience... It was my first time doing a major project from the engineering end and now moreso than ever I have mucho respect for audio engineers. I also learned a lot about the use of stereo. I feel like our sound has really come together in the past few weeks during the mixdown process, we've gotten everything to stand out and be heard but still sit right in the mix like we want it to.

Now it's time to find a singer... and a name we all like...

I hope you'll find a good singer to make them justice!

yeah, the songs are really energetic and all over the map style-wise, so he's definitely got some big shoes to fill

Man you guys are funky! I wish I could groove like that. Good job and well done!

DTune was my favorite. How do you get that sitar-sound?

Liked every clip when you get a singer let us know!

Definately like to hear more! Love those SD Hotrails myself. I run one (for almost 10 years now) in an 84 Squier strat.

you mean the bass intro?

......yes. 20 seconds in (DTune) the bass kinda sounds like a sitar. Any effects used?

yeah, it's the same bass track split into four tracks, one clean, one flanged, one with chorus, and one with a phaser, tweaked to taste (all effects are plug-ins in Cubase)

There's another one up if you go to http://www.xoclore.com

Also the quality is higher on those songs too, since myspace compresses the poop out of them...

Listened to all the clips again! IMO, your onto a good thing. It's reminiescent of a harder RHCP. Now whether there's a market for it...who knows. Anyway, you've got a fan in Cowlumbus and I'll definitely be watching your bands progress. One of my best friends lives in San Diego, I'll let him know to keep an eye out for you guys. Please keep us informed!

Which bass did you use on the recording?

most of it was done with a really early model Ken Lawrence custom 4 string, the rest was with a fender marcus miller jazz
