I must say that I had the chance to test the F50 the other day, and i was REALLY surprised about how crap it sounded like.

I´d tested the F50 before, and I really don´t remeber getting such a muddy sound out of it. The clean channel needen´t have to be cranked up to break, and the contour channel was kind of muddy, lacking definition in all of the OD stages. And the same applied for the reverb....

I didn´t say anything to the clerck, but I left the shop thinking "what the hell was wrong with that amp!"

Maybe you guys have an idea about it, because I really can´t remember the amp sounding like that when I tested it a couple of months ago.

I´m worried, I was thinking of getting the F50, but after that I don´t know if the amp is really that bad or it was just that it had an issue.

Any ideas??

Sounds like it needs some new tubes, I'd have definetly mentioned that to the clerk.

Yup... sounds like a tube problem. When I got my F-50 it was way too bright... no mud to be found in that amp! I had to switch out the preamp tubes to another brand to tame the high end.

Not that the F-50 is the greatest sounding amp in the world, but "like crap" means that either the controls were set to extremes, tubes went bad or something else wasn't functioning right. I went to GC to try a Budda 18 watter 3 times over a 2 week period. Absolutely stunning gain channel for the first 2 tries. The 3rd try..."sounded like crap" :) Same amp, same guitarist. nearly the same guitar....just a different day.

When looking for a new amp, I tried the F-50 and got the same results, I thought it was a muddy mess. Perhaps I didn't EQ it too well, but it just sounded like pure mud to me. I ended up splurging a few extra bucks for a rectoverb and have no regrets.

Well, I can't really argue with you since I did the same thing :) but I thought the cleans on the F-50 were outstanding!

Yeah, it really depends on the type of music you're playing. Cleans are important, I have an older Peavey trans-amp that the cleans are useless on, but the dirty channel is awesome. Rectoverb's cleans are pretty good, I have no complaints.

Ideas? I played an F-100 in a GC in Richmond, VA that sounded like a bunch of bees fighting in a tin can. Yet, when I play my F-100 combo at home, I get great tones. Perhaps the difference is in upkeep? :)

The amp has probably been abused/neglected as are most floor models.

I think a lot depends on the guitar you are using as well as the tubes that are in the amp. From what I've read there can be big differences in tubes even when it is the same type of tube from the same manufacturer. Also, there is a huge difference between playing my F-50 with my Les Paul and my Gretsch.

How long ago was that? I probably played that amp and thought the same thing... 8)
BTW - if you get up to Richmond again, go to Richmond Music, their upkeep is stellar on amps.

I guess it was a few years now. It was the GC on West Broad St. next to the Sam Ash.

+1 on Richmond Music. I bought my first amplifier from them. :)
