it's short and sweet, at 2:20 minutes.

this is a first pass mix and master, i could use some 'other ears' on it.
mine are fried.
thanks.

thanks ToneAddictJon!
i just uploaded a brand new mix (sunday afternoon @ 4pm mst), with less room mic on the kit, more snare, a new bass track, a cleaner submix....
see if this one's better....

I prefer the original one a little more, but this one is definitely cleaner. Something about the more raw version that just felt a little more alive to me though. Both sound great though, absolutely love that guitar tone :D

This is great man... lively track! I can hear that you are enjoying the playing very much. Nice lines and everything. The mix is very good too, I think the drums could be maybe a hair louder, like even just +0.5db

The structure is a tad weird, but that's fine, god knows I love to play with structure.

Hell yea.. ******' rad tone man... how did you mic this??

EDIT: On second thought, just make the snare louder, the rest is fine. Or maybe just EQ it up a bit to bring out the snap.

tone-
i always like the 1st versions of things better...
and then 2nd guess myself all the way down the rest of the line!
LOL

MRD-
no mics.

and i agree, even tho i took the overall instrument levels down 4 times, i think the solo guitar tracks are still too loud..
i'm gonna work on em tonight, and get them more dialed in.

guitars: no mics.
the guitar rig- my '81 boogie markIIb, into a Weber Mass Lite 100w attenuator, thru a palmer PDI-09 DI, back into a roland 1x12 closed back cab with celestion greenback--- with a xlr output from the palmer to the recording rig.

recording rig-
palmer xlr out goes to the A Designs Audio MP-1 tube mic pre, out of that into the little DBX MC-6 compressor, out of that into the ART DPS convertor section (only), and on to the MAudio Delta Audiophile 2496 card, into sonar.

TAX DAY SPECIAL!!!
-- brand new mix, with hotter drums, more dialed in.

quick mix change synopsis:
hotter snare, both upper and lower heads. applied multiband compressor to entire kit. brought overhead mics in from extreme far left and right to closer to 90 degrees from center (3:00 and 9:00). brought kick down a tad.

dialed back lead guitar volumes, pumped up the rhythms slightly.

added high end at 2.2khz to solo guitar. added 200 hz on solo guitar.

dip at 215hz on bass guitar. rolloff at 40 hz.

i'm happiest with this mix so far...

new mix!

((ok, decided to re-visit this before i get REAL drum tracks from a bud that wanted a shot at it...))

thanks to another forum member-
now i know how to redirect midi outputs to new tracks, AFTER the fact!
LOL
still on the sonar learning curve....

i had wanted to seperate the snare out from the kit, and didn't know how to do it..now i do.

but i only took out the snare top and bottom tracks, left the rest of the kit on the track 1 stereo output....
and tweaked the automation on the mix.

i added a seperate sonitus reverb to the snare top only, and played around with it til i got what i wanted....
re-eq'd the snare tracks....
got more POP out of them.

put a multiband on the overall kit tracks, and getting the snare out of there, really let me dial the kick and overheads in a lot better.

i got a lot more aggressive with the guitar mix, and especially the solo guitar mix.

see if this mix sounds any more dialed in!

thanks masque!!

i'm really digging this new Weber mass/Palmer junction setup for recording...

it's giving me super clean tracks, that are a lot easier to eq and experiment with than the miced tracks.

typically, i'm trying to mic to get that super clean distinct sound anyway, so this makes it so much easier.

i've found i can add really nice ambient reverbs, and it sounds identical to my miced tracks (with room sound)....

but most of the time, i just leave it dry, or in the case of this song, slap a touch of delay on solo sections...

question;

"the guitar rig- my '81 boogie markIIb, into a Weber Mass Lite 100w attenuator, thru a palmer PDI-09 DI, back into a roland 1x12 closed back cab with celestion greenback--- with a xlr output from the palmer to the recording rig."

in your description of the guitar recording rig.....why are you running the signal back into a roland 1x 12 closed back cab? is that for monitoring purposes becasue you mention the xlr output running directly into the recording rig.

why are you running the signal back into a roland 1x 12 closed back cab? is that for monitoring purposes becasue you mention the xlr output running directly into the recording rig.

EXACTLY!

i can use the roland cab, to get just enough volume for me to 'interact' with the speaker still..
by close proximity.

i can record 'open air', while cranking the monitors, and the cab is set at a really comfy volume (thanks to the WEBER), but i'm putting my boogie 'in the zone' for getting exactly the amount of power tube distortion.

the palmer, see's the signal BEFORE the weber, so it's getting the full monty.

~~OR~~

i can record in ultra quiet mode, with the headphones instead of the monitors blasting, and the cab/weber is set at the lowest volume, so i'm still getting honest interaction between the speaker in the cab, and the head....
i could do the weber all the way, but the cab interaction DOES change the way the boogie responds... and i prefer that to the pure WEBER-ONLY interaction.

so, it's really the best of both worlds, when i need to record quietly, but still want the FULL-ON boogie tone.
