Cool idea! Wish I'd have thought of that.

I just used masking tape, so If I have to slide something out of the rack, it doesn't scrape metal on metal.
 
I noticed you have rear rails. A 1u rack shelf mounted on the rear rail will slip under the back of the Tri acting as cantilevered support. An inexpensive shelf with 10 - 11" depth typically runs around $30. Just make sure the actual usable width of the shelf is at least 17.3".
