I recently picked up a used Express 5:50 head and I am having trouble EQing a warm balanced tone using the clean channel. I have a Fender Strat with Texas specials and the closest I can get to a balanced tone that does not sound like a thin, shrill, ice pickey mess is with the treble and mids zero'd out and the bass at 12:00. This seems a bit odd to me. I also have a Les Paul copy, it sounds a little warmer than the strat but definitely still on the bright side if I try to bring in any treble or Mids. I am running the head into a 1x12 cab with a V30 speaker. Anyone out there that uses Texas specals and has problems with the amp being way too bright?

If the LP copy sounds shrill with treble and mid off, there's something wrong with the amp. You need to get it checked out. The 5:50 is not a shrill amp.

Mine sounds anything but thin. Clean channel is outstanding.
Sounds like you have tube issues.
