I dialed in a pretty close match for my ears:
Guitar: Peavey Wolfgang (the type of guitar is important)
EQ before amp: Set an EQ pedal, 6 band or whatever, with crooked frown curve (treble side a little higher than bass side, mids boosted)
Also use a Phaser subtly (mixed with dry signal) and on a slow sweep for solos etc.

Crank the amp pretty loud to get the power section to saturate, at lower volumes maybe boost the gain a bit and at higher volumes reduce the gain. The gain for power tubes is more important that the pre-amp section gain. His sound is really a lot cleaner than it seems.
