I just noticed in the past week there I have been getting a fairly strong electrical smell coming from my Simul-Class 2:90. It is housed in a 2 rack space container. I can hear the fan still running.

Has anyone had this happen or have suggestions of what should be done?

Many thanks :)

D.

Pull it out, open the top lid and take a look inside.
Just a guess, but the plastic power connector on the inside (from top-front view it´s placed in the back left side) is known to fail/short....

I think you are exactly right! I have attached a pic that shows the slightly burned part of the plastic clip. It is still entirely intact and the amp runs fine.

Is this the type of thing that will just continue to worsen and should be fixed right away?

Thanks,
D.

That´s it!
I would attend this immediately as the solid green wires are the 6.3V tube heaters.
Either solder all wires from the connector (or have them all wired by a tech) directly to the board or get a higher quality connector as stated in the thread I mentioned yesterday.

Excellent, thanks so much for your help!

I will have it looked at right away :)

Thanks,
d.

That plastic harness connector did the same thing in my amp. I sent it to mesa and they simply soldered the wires directly to the board.
I also had them check the amp over while they had it.

I got to a gig and the amp would seemingly power up (blue light), but the tubes wouldn't fire.
I called them and they mentioned that it was a pretty common issue.
It wasn't an expensive fix, but shipping the amp was.
I generally send to Mesa as they know the amps and they usually have it back within 2 1/2 weeks.

*note.. if you take the cover off to inspect it.. don't touch anything in there aside from the tubes. Those big blue filter caps can put you on your aRse or worse if you touch them (even with the amp off and un-plugged).

I had this exact thing happen last Friday night as I fired the amp up. Thank goodness for this forum, as I quickly found the answers and was able to get a local shop to start working on the amp this morning. Mine is from 1991 and I've never had an issue with it until this happened.
