If you're getting a lot of cone cry try adding another 1/4 turn or two to one of the nuts holding the speaker in. It'll twist the basket slightly and shift the voice coil off center, which helps with cone cry.

Thanks for that tip, I didn't know about that. I'll give it a try.

It's interesting how everyone seems to perceive this amp a bit differently. It also seems uniquely qualified to deliver the extreme lows or highs for varying tastes. Cool beast, all around. Awfully loud, tho. Who is that for, exactly?

I think the loudness is a function of its design.

All the Mesa amps I've used produce no volume until you have the channel volume somewhere between 8:00 and 8:30... at which point it jumps up in loudness and is really touchy if you're trying to keep it quiet. With the addition of the effects loop/master volume it's not such a big deal however as you have that second master volume to ratchet the amp volume down, and it does the low volume thing much more smoothly.

The ED lacks the second master volume, so once you're in that 8:00 to 8:30 range you're kind of on your own.

I'm serious, for low volume playing cut the mids down. It will really mitigate the perceived volume and give a 'phatter' tone at the same time.

I personally think extreme lows belong to the bassist so I always cut my bass when playing in a band situation. As for the highs, the presence is a VERY powerful control on this amp. It is miles different than the 'sizzle' or 'fizz' dial it is on other amps. It really alters the tonal character of the amp and can transport it from a very vintage character to a much more modern one. My only slight annoyance is having to jimmy around the tone controls on my guitar so my clean does not make people's ears bleed when the amp is in 'metal mode'.
