I heard these are lower-gain preamp tubes, if so, can a 12AX7/ECC83 be swapped out directly for an ECC81? (would go inV1)
Would I lose volume as well as gain?
Your help would be appreciated!
 
I've read here that 12AT7's are sometimes used in #1 and/or the #5 (or #6) phase inverter positions as well as for reverb. It does work in place of a 12AX7.
 
Yes, but not enough so that you'd really notice if you're trying to make your amp quieter.

I agree, but to clarify - you will definitely notice a change in overdrive and feel. But it is not likely you'll get a significant volume drop. Going to a 12AU7 will bring a volume drop, but is probably too extreme a change.
