I have had my dual recto for two years and it has finally come to the time of replacing the power tubes (can't believe they've lasted two years!)

Does anyone have any advice for me regarding the kind of tubes I should try? For instance, a lot of people go on about JJ's, Svetlana's, Groove Tubes etc, but in truth are they any better than the stock Mesa ones?

Also, do I simply purchase four matched 6L6 tubes (whatever brand) and slam them straight into the amp? Or do I have to do anything to the amp before installing the new ones.

Cheers

I've tried Mesa tubes (STR-420's, 430's and 454's), JJ's and the SED Winged "C". To my tastes, the SED's are the way to go. They sound more "open" with good bass response and good "chunk" factor.

Power tubes *do* make a difference in your amp and you can hear a significant difference. Trust me - I would have saved $100's on tubes if I didn't hear differences between preamp and power tubes...

FYI - I play Tool, Alter Bridge, Disturbed-type music, so take it for what it's worth.

*edit* One more thing - if you do decide to purchase non-Mesa power tubes, make sure you get them within Mesa bias specs (usually, just let whoever you're buying them from know that you'll be using them in a Mesa amp).
