Hi all,

I am new to the board and am looking for some opinions on amps. I play mostly Stoner/Sludge metal ala High on Fire, Crowbar, Fu Manchu etc etc. I am torn between the Orange rockerverb 50 and the Mesa Dual Rectifier. Either head will be running through a 2X12 with V30's in it. I personally think the Orange has the best "Tone" all by itself, but the Mesa has a bit heavier punch to it and more options for different sounds. Any thoughts on the matter are most welcomed.

which mesa DR? Roadster, Road King, older DR (2 channel), newer DR (3 Channel), Tremoverb???

Personally for that type of music i would look into an older 2 channel DR. But it also depends if you need a good clean because the clean channel on the older ones was less than desirable for me. BUT the heavy tones could melt the paint off the walls. I would even look into the older Triple Rectifiers as the additionla wattage gives you some great headroom. I think if you compared the 2 channel rectos to the rockerverb you might change your mind about which one has the best tone.

Also if you looking for something more versatile, look into the Roadster. The cleans are taken from the Lonestar's circuit which means amazing cleans and you still get the brutal recto tones. to me the Roadsters high gain channels are more remeniscent of the older 2 channel rectos. Then if your into all the bells and whistles look at the Road King. its the same amp as the Roadster just with more options like 6l6s and el34s in one amp, cab switching, etc.

Also outside of Mesa the 5150 IIs or the 6505+ maybe something worth looking into aside from the Orange.

The Dual rec your refering to (three channel) is a big loose sloppy monster. I have one... And I dig it for what it is...

The Orange would be a better amp for lead work and if you want a tighter sound across the board...

Both great amps but it depends on what your after... tight or loose...

I have no Idea what the bands sound like your refering to ( I am to old) so I just gave you my over all impression of the amps.

The Dual rectifier I was referring to was the three channel model. I tried a triple three channel but I don't need 150 watts. The roadster looks interesting but I am guessing the price is much more then either the Orange or the Dual triple channel.

I like a looser sound, more for grooves and chugs. Not a big fan of the tight buzz saw sound.

Getting a triple isnt about the wattage in terms of volume but in terms of tone and headroom. And the Roadster isn't much more than a regular DR new. IMO its well worth the extra 150-200 to get the roadster over the regular DR because you get a great clean channel and a much smoother gain channels. If you dig the smoother sound with the balls of a recto the Roadster fits that great.

Thanks man, I will have to check out the roadster. I do like have a nice clean and the triple rectifier was ok but not great when it came to clean sounds.

the cleans are like night and day between the TR and the Roadster. and i think the sludge can definitely be dialed in to any Recto, especially with the right OD infront to add some nice harmonics and liquidy crunch (kinda like a twix... yeah i went there  ).
