I was looking at getting one, but somebody said it had a "cabinet emulator" type deal on it and I planned on using it with a VHT power amp to play out. Will that feature ruin any sound I might want to get live?

I don't know if this helps, but I'll be running the rack setup through my Marshall Vintage 4x12 with V30s. Thanks.

emulator is for direct recording .
Your question is completely nonsense.
Dowload its manual and spend 5 minutes reading it.

It has two sets of stereo outputs. One set is normal, the other set has a cabinet simulator on it.

the live out works great with a power amp.

anyway, the cab sim on the recording out is very, very understated by cab sim standards. It sounds more like a slave out from a power amp.

I find it great for live. Not so great for recording. Maybe I haven't mastered all the tricks to the direct outs.

As for cabinet sim... there are direct recording outs and it only "emulates" a dual recto through a recto cabinet, and in my experience, poorly. As I said, maybe I just haven't mastered it.

But live through a 2:100... killer. I'd love to try a VHT power amp with it. but, I have a feeling there would be more to gain by me replacing, or adding another, pre amp.

Like a Triaxis, studio, or quad :)

I'd say the Recto Pre doesn't have a cabinet emulator. But it does do an excellent job of emulating the interaction between a power amp and cabinet. If you add a good cabinet simulator the unit will sound very impressive and the feel will be superb.

For best results you need to choose either live outs or recording outs. Using both at the same time compromises the sound.

Thanks. that's a good tip. I think I did have all the "live stuff" hooked up at the same time.
