yesterday on practice i noticed following:

someone els was playing my SG reissue for some metal-tunes.
as i'm always looking for the sound i like most i was tweaking my eq, presence and gain.

this is what happened:(everything on the red channel)
- when tweaking bass: almost nothing happend:
turned on 0: ok there's less bass
turned on 10: there's a little little bit of bass!?!?!?
- tweaking the mids:
here i get all the bass (ok it's normal to get bass out of the midsection,
but no bass on my bass section??!!)
- tweaking mids and highs: feedback when i turn one or both of them
above 2...
when i put less gain, the feedback stop, but i lose all my drive, offcourse..
and the presence doesn't affect any on the feedback issue..

are those my pots?
or should i retube?

How old is the amp? If it is fairly new I would not suspect the pots, although a humid location can reek havoc on those things.

Sounds more like a tube issue. Do any of the other channels act that way?

Try changing pre-amp tubes one at a time until you notice a change.

Good luck

Dom

it's an 'older' one,
i don't think humidity is the cause, because it's in a good isolated room when using, when otherwise, it's in its case!
for the other channel: i didn't try them (now only use the red channel in this band)

i'll take him to my amp doctor and ask him for the tubes
(because i'm not realy a good technician for those things..)

thanks for the answer!

no need to pay somebody to change tubes!!!

It's the simplest operation in the world. If you can pull and push something, then you can replace tubes. Try changing the preamp tubes one at a time until you find the one that is bad.

Or you can lightly tap them with a pencil while the amp is on to see if one makes an erratic noise.

Sounds like a rectifier EQ to me

It's an active EQ...the treble is much like another gain knob....I've also noticed how the mids work like that....if you like a bassier scooped tone, turn them down....if you like a more kicking and balanced tone, keep them around 12 or 1 o'clock.

Sounds perfectly normal to me.

How close to the amp are you when it feedbacks? When your running a lot of gain and a moderate volume, a high gain tube amp will feedback.

well, i'm pretty close to the amp,
but far enough ,as far as i know, to not have feedback..

my problem is actualy that i didn't have these issues a couple of months ago..
it didn't kick in suddenly, but it came little by little..or my hearing has become better :)

sound normal to me too but if you say that you can now actually hear a significant difference then it might need a look at,I was going to say that the pots need changed if its in a humid climate but seeing as its not the only other thing that could solve it would be new tubes

please dont pay someone to replace these its a waste of cash, simply grab em and pull then out

stick the other ones in!!!

that simple
