A dealer here told me that the roadster and roadking have more gain in the preamp stage than the normal DR or TR's. Is this true? I did see a video of Petrucci playing straight into a RK at a clinic without any boost pedals and the lead tone sounds amazing. I can never get enough gain on my old DR or TR and that was the reason I have my Mark IV which has almost too much gain.

maybe on channel 4 but its been a while since ive played a straight up DR.... i would lean towards no but maybe channel 4 because it has more gain than channel 3 (as well as a little more compression)

I dont think I get any more gain outta my Roadster than I do my dual rec either. Just a tighter less boomy gain.

I say no in my experience, it is not true. One way to find out for sure; call Mesa Boogie in Petamula, CA. They are extremely friendly and helpful and will certainly answer that for you on the phone :)
