Does anyone like the 6505?

Hello,

My bandmate has a Peavey 6505 and loves it. I think it sounds alright, but would take my Boogie any day over the 6505.

Here's my question: are there any applications where you'd go to the 6505 before a 2 channel Triple Rectifier? I'd like to get an idea of where to use his amp for our album. I mean, to me, it seems brutal but without as much tone. Anyway, what's the general consensus?

where the 6505 outshines the triple recs is in price only. for 600-700 used you really can`t beat it.

ya that is what i was thinking. There isn't really a reason to get a 6505 compared to a rec besides the price. That said i am sure that properly eq'd you two could work something out so that it sounds even more massive together. I think bullet for my valentine pairs a rec with a 6505

Try giving the 6505 lots of space in the mix (don't EQ it radically) but keep its volume lower. Use it to 'fill up' the sound. Have your Rec higher but do the standard high and low cuts on it. Just a thought.

I have a 5150 and thought it was o.k. but something was missing. I read on another forum that a BBE 422/422a is a must for the 5150 so I picked one up on ebay (the 422 is out of production). The tone was great! I could dial back the upper end fizz and up the low end chunk. Later I found out that everyone was recommending using the 5150/6505 cab for the best sound. Later I found a used 6505 cab at local shop and it made a big difference.
The low end chunk is different than a DR/TR but it is brutal enough to give you a chunky sound at low volume.

I use both mesa and peavey 5150. the 5150 is great. good compliment to the mesa recto sound

i have a 5150 Block Letter head to go with my Stiletto.....i think both amps are great. i changed out the 12AX7 in V4 with a 12AT7. and that got rid of the fiz that she had. that amp has gain for days and if you can keep the gain under contraol along with the presence......thats when itll really shine. one thing im about to do it the Bias mod. so i can have even more control on the overall sound of the amp.

I had one and no comparison to a boogie, its just a fuzzy noisy mess if you ask me. Massive gain though, if thats all you want.

I have a non-plus 6505 head (modded to 60 Watts) and a Single-Recto Solo 50 (SR50). They both sound different, although with some tweaking I can get them to sound surprisingly similar. The Recto definitely has more available presence and treble on tap than the 6505, but gets real fizzy once the gain is turned up (of course, so does the 6505). To those who say the 5150/6505 is a fizzy mess, I can say the same about my Recto. Certainly, the 6505 could do with some improvement in the fizzy/definition department, but that's nothing a replacement Mercury Magnetics output transformer and a re-bias couldn't "fix" in a hurry.

I have an A/B/C/D switch so I can compare all four of my amps directly (SR50/6505/MKIV/DC3). And, to my surprise, I'm finding I like my 6505 better than my SR50. The SR50 can do some neat things, but the 6505 is more mid-range-ey. The 6505 also has a lot more sustain than my SR50 for some reason. A LOT more. Using both in an A/B/Y configuration makes for some thundering rhythm sounds. But, I don't use my Recto at all for leads (and never intended to). The 6505 has this dry, "scratchy" sound for leads that I really like, and sounds much closer to a Soldano SLO than a Recto does. Although I like my Recto for its "Recto" sound, if I had to choose between the two, I would probably choose the 6505.

I have close to the same set up as LEVEL4, 5150 head and a single rect (both stock). I could not get a good low end chug with the SR nor with the 5150 until I added the BBE 422. This is how I found the low end chug that I liked with the 5150 but it did nothing with the SR.
Just like LEVEL4, if I had to choose I would take the 5150/6505 (probably not a very popular statement on a Mesa forum)

I never understood why some people want other people to tell them whether they should like amplifier "xyz". There doesn't need to be a concensus.

Who cares what other people think. If you like it, that's all that matters.

Tone is so relative and subjective.

I personally don't care for them. They're a low quality amp and it shows in how they're built and just the general amount of noise with them.

Tonally, they might be great but I can't get past the cheapness.

Yeah. I f you need tons of gain and a Marshall esque sound, nothing beats Soldano.

I CAN think of some areas where the 5150 excels against the Rectos. In Melodic Death Metal. The sound of a 5150 can be heard on countless albums and bands who use them live. Carcass, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dark Tranquility and they sound great

It's the only reason I own one
