Do I have to use the stock footswitch with my Mark II?

I would much rather use another single footswitch that I have, but I don't know if there's any risk of blowing a fuse or worse. Does the particular footswitch really make a difference technically? I am also eyeing up a new Boss GT-10 which has an amp switching interface so I want to know that I can use that safely too.
