I also like to roll the mids back to about 9 or 10 o'clock. To my ears, the mid control actually controls some high frequency tone as well.
But, I think the most pleasing EQ settings depend much on what guitar you are using, as well as the tonal preference of the player. I don't have a Les Paul, but I'll bet that I would keep the mids around 12 if I did. With my somewhat bright maple neck ASAT, I have to dial the mids, treble, and presence down.
