Hi Guys!

Below are links to 3 quick clips on Soundclick.com that I made this evening with the DC10 and the BB Preamp as I promised earlier. I left my two cents too FWIW :lol:

Basic Set-up--> Les Paul Custom bridge PU into a Boss Tu-2 (bypass jack) into the BB preamp (original orange one) into the DC-10 into a closed back Crystal City Lab cab with a Celestion G12-T75 16 Ohm speaker, miced by a good old SM57 right down its throat. Here are the settings:

Clip one - Clean Channel, VEQ on (with reduced bass sliders) with BB preamp on

DC-10 (knobs left to right 9 1/2 (pulled) 51/2 3 4 3 1/2 1 2 1 1/2
BB - Vol 10AM Gain 9AM Treble 11AM Bass 2PM

My two cents - I think that the BB adds some nice thickness/saturation to the DC-10 across the board. However, I think that the difference between using the BB for this purpose versus the VEQ, isn't worth $179 bucks IMHO. I like the metal tones I heard this evening just fine without the BB, with the EQ on. Nonetheless, the BB could be useful for solo boosts in this arrangement. Now the difference the BB makes with my Lonestar Classic is much more significant. On the Lonestar clean channel I use it for that "slight dirty breakup sound/mild OD" (for example Stones, Tom Petty, Skynyrd,etc) and adding more punch to cleanish leads. On the OD channel, it just smokes for goosing the input and cranking it up to 11! Very Marshall- esque with EL34s powering the Lonestar. So.......if I was in a 80s-90s metal band right now instead of a classic rock band, I would use the DC-10 hands down with or without the BB. It just rocks hard and makes your ears bleed - plain and simple! 8) With the Lonestar, the BB adds a much broader tone selection. As always, YMMV.

Cool clips! I have to say that I couldn't really hear a big difference with the pedal on. It seems to add some gain of course, but nothing really magical seemed to happen. Is the effect different in person?

I noticed in the first clip (Clip 1) that you have your gain set pretty high on the clean channel to start with. This adds crunch on my DC-3. How does the pedal sound as the main distortion through the clean channel (with the gain at 4 or 5 so it's clean without the pedal)? Basically using the BB as a 3rd channel is what I was thinking of doing...

Awesome! That was about what I was expecting to hear. It really keeps the character of the amp's channel and just adds gain for the most part. I'd love to find one at GC or something to mess with it in person. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. Thanks for the clips! I appreciate it! Hopefully they'll help others out too.

Happy to help Adam. I got my (orange) BB on the Bay for $165 shipped. New orange ones are going for $186 and the new BB Plus for $249. You might get lucky if you do a nation-wide search in the used gear section of GC.com. Sometimes musicgoround.com has them too. Happy hunting!

Well I went to guitar center over the weekend and played a bunch of different pedals looking for some sort of "boost" pedal and after playing tube screamers some clean boosts and went with the Digitech Hardwire CM-2. Its a neat little pedal that I feel doesn't color my tone like the tube screamer or boss did when I used it and i can still use the pedal to get less over driven sounds on the clean channel as if I pulled the drive knob on it. It definitely helps the lead channel a lot.

Now if i can just get my DC-5 to sound better than my Crate GX212 while playing metal.

With all due respect to the Crate, if you can't get a good metal sound out of the DC-5, you're doing something wrong. I would start by downloading the manual from the Mesa website. It usually has a page or two of sample settings which are good starting points. Also, the Boogie Board has a database of amp settings too. FWIW, IF you're looking for a Dual Recto-type of metal sound, the DC-5 may not do it for you - it's voiced much differently. Don't be afraid to experiment. Good luck!

Im not trying to diss the boogie, I love the lead tones im getting out of my boogie im just trying to get a similar tight sound that i can get from my crate. At the same time it could just be my ears are really used to the sounds that come out of that amp because it was my main amp back in my high school metal band. Plus the crate has an extra speaker which helps things also. I had a pretty good tone going last night and im nowhere near done tweaking with the thing. I might try recording both to let you guys hear the difference im hearing.
