My DC3 has been down for a year.. thankfully I had a MK IV as a back up.. (I personally like the sound of the DC3 better) I took it to an authorized dealer in Tucson, and it apparently passed the “bench test.” Low and behold, after changing out perfectly good tubes, having circuits tested, resodering and tightening tube sockets, I found out it was the speaker. Question is, what constitutes a bad speaker? I know what dry rot looks like, or having a tear / hole it it.. I’ve heard about “coil rub” . how do you know a speaker needs to be reconed or have something else done to it, like remagnitized?
Should you
1) recone it yourself with a kit?
2) send the speaker in for a recone job…
3) spring for the $$ for a new Vintage 30 (where are they made at? China now?).
4) Get a replacement like a tone tubby.. and what replacement will fit in that cab?
I started using the DC again, sans blown combo, going direct into my C90 or EV closed back. But it’s just extra gear to carry.. Can’t say enough about this little powerhouse., lesson learned.. check tubes and speaker! Thanks..

That sucks. I hate to hear about a DC that is not working.

Here is a great link to tons of speaker information:

Ted Weber is the man when it comes to speakers.

As for a good replacement, I have an English Vintage 30 that I don't use. It is 16 ohm, and in very decent shape.

As for other speakers that I've tried with my smaller Mesa amps:

Weber Thames - great speaker, a little warmer than the MC-90
https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/ Call these guys, any of the British series would be a good match for that amp.

Mojotone BV Series - You could use the BV30V here. Mojo buys the
parts from the original Celestion supplier, then has them assembled here in the US. Very good tone & build quality.

Hope this helps. I'm in Silver City, NM (about 200 miles from you), if you want the Vintage 30, shipping would be cheap. Let me know if you want some pics.

+1 on the Webers. Try a good 50 watt Alnico, like a 12A150. Really warms up the sound.

Try an Eminence Texas Heat. They are inexpensive and sound great with the DC-3. Go to their website, they have pretty good sound clips of their offerings.
