Hi! I recently sold (Don't bludgeon me!) my Mark II Rectoverb Combo. It was in perfect working order when I sent it, and the package was really well packed, and I mean really. Unfortunately upon arrival the amplifier, apparently, didn't work. He said when he plugged in there was just a horrendous gated fuzz sound. At first I thought one or more of the tubes had gone microphonic, but when I asked him to perform the old tap-tubes-with-non-metallic-item test he said it just constantly wailed with an odd high pitched noise. I'm baffled, but really need to get this sorted. If I had paid £800 for an amp I'd expect it to be perfect, he's being very patient though. The courier company aren't liking the fact I'm trying to get a measly £100 out of them for a service when I insured it for £750! :(

Thanks in advance :)

That was my first thought. But it's all money. Though, I feel it's within my sellers good will to at least offer to go halves on some new tubes. I mean, I did my part of the deal well It's the blasted couriers who think they can chuck things about. I actually have a couple of 12ax7's I was going to pop in my Dr Z head, hm. Well thank you for your reply. I'll hold out to see if the couriers cash out. Or if it's a relatively easy fix (which I can't see it being) I'll have to pay it. It'd be good to just know exactly what is wrong, so I can relay information to the seller, but still; all of this calls for one thing, troubleshooting.

Yeah it's a crappy situation to be in for sure.. I've received a few amps that did the same thing and it's always a preamp tube gone wonky due to shipping/vibration. I'll bet it's like a 10 dollar fix.

I'll be happy if it's just one of the 12ax7's. I'll even pay for it if it is. Thanks again for your help.

My new policy is when shipping an amp i box the tubes seperatly and make sure it is in a crush proof box.

Reason for this is last time I shipped an amp the tubes became displaced and the tab broke off. the buyer put one of the tubes in wrong and it blue the resister.

But the other reason I am making this my new policy is I know a lot of guys that will buy tube amps, and then tell the seller some of the tubes broke in shipping (even though they didnt) in order to get some money back.

if you box it seperatly, they cant complain of this.

Very true, that would've been wise and it DID cross my mind. I really should've taken that approach. Could have saved a lot of hassle.

Shipped two tubes amps. One to France one to Lousiana. Both had at least one preamp tube that did not survive packed seperatley within the amp. I thought I'd done a good job packing them. I aggree with siggy and will be doing any future sales in two boxes.
