i was thinking about getting these put in my avatar 2x12 instead of vintage 30s, as i am looking for a sound with a lot of headroom. anyone have experience with these speakers , positive or negative?

also, do they weigh more than the v30's ?

I believe these are basically the Celestion C90s. Can anyone confirm this?

I can't confirm it but I read it somewhere.

I can't confirm this either 'cause I read it somewhere but the Classic Lead 80 was Celestion version of an "American" sound speaker (ala Jensen) but handling more watts. That is why they sound a little different than their typical so called "British" tone.

Celestion rep told me that Black Shadow 90's are Classic Lead 80's with a vented polepiece that brings the power handling up to 90 watts.

To answer your question regarding CL80's the weight is the same and tonally between a V30 and CL80 this is what you will hear.

V30 - Appears louder then the CL80, has more upper mids with less bass response, good for humbuckers. The upper treble is not as extended so the speaker isn't as bright.

CL80 - More even throughout tonal range, lots of lower mids which is good for single coil guitars, stays focused under heavy distortion. High treble settings on the amp can make the speaker too bright. Definitely quieter then the V30.

I had both these in a Guytron cabinet but have since switched to a Wizard/Governor combo.
