Hi all,

I ma considering purchasing a used 5:50. Can a 5:50 do the Transatlantic Vox sound? I really liked that sound on the TA. Also, any general observations-comparisons between the two amps? Recommendations?

imo, no. im not even sure the 5:25 with its el84's can properly hit it.

youll probably wind up with a super clean fender tone, through and through. its still one of mesa's best clean tones, imo. ive heard people compare it to a lonestar classic clean or a mark v fat clean.

No Vox in a 5:50. I agree with jsabo.
5:50 is a 6L6 amp so no way it can sound Voxy.

5:50 is a very different beast to the Trans or a Vox.
I really like the Trans but the 5:50 is a much better amp imo on every critieria.
So is the 5:25 imo and so is a Vox AC30.

There's lots of Vox clones around but the original is still the best if you want that tone

OK, I guess I can live without that Vox sound....another question. I play stoner rock and have Ampegs(VT40) and Orange (OR and Retro) amps. I happen to be away from them and was looking at a 5:50 for portability issues and was taken by the little bugger...but now I am looking at a used 5:50 for the same price. I figured the 5:50 was a better all around amp. Will the 5:50 do stoner rawk-thick, heavy with solid fundamentals? Will it team up well with my pedal board? I like the flexibility the 5:50 offers as well. I thought with a great, solid clean I would be at a good starting spot...unless that clean is all Fender.

yes, it will do everything you want, except the vox thing. it covers basically every range except super heavy recto saturation. it handles pedals extremely well. i also think it'll do the stoner rock thing well.

give it a try, you might come to like the clean (its close to a fender, though not exactly). mesas have tone controls that are very responsive, unlike fenders, so in trying it out, you may be able to get it closer to what you're after.

Soulohio, when you try out the 5:50 don't be shy about really experimenting with the tone controls. The 5:50 is very responsive to the tone controls and contour control. You can even use extreme settings and you will be surprised at the way it warms up and gets thick, dark and heavy and "stoner" as you wrote. It also cleans up very well when you roll off the volume control of your guitar. I have owned other amps in the past but I have never owned an amp that can clean up as easily as an Express by just rolling down the guitar's volume and turning up the guitar's tone control slightly. As for pedals, I can't say much because I don't use any. I rely on the range I get out of the amp. And yes, you can just enter the threshold of Rectifier territory if you max out all of your tone and gain controls in the Burn mode in a 5:50. At least with SPAX7's in all five pre-amp positions. A friend of mine has a Single Rectifier 50 Head and when he uses just moderate gain settings my 5:50 can hang with his Recto any day! Mind you my 5:50 is going balls to the wall and his amp is just cruising!
